Pittsboro, NC – In honor of LGBT Pride Month in June, Chatham Community Library will play a role in highlighting diversity and the many contributions of the LGBT community by offering a weeklong virtual screening of the documentary, Deep Run (2015), beginning June 10 and continuing through June 17, 2021. This program is free and open to the public.
Executive produced by Susan Sarandon, Deep Run is a powerful portrait of transgender life in rural Lenoir County, North Carolina. Cole, a young transgender Christian man, along with his girlfriend, Ashley, faces significant challenges, including hostile family and church members, and crippling financial burdens. Deep Run explores the intersection of modern identity and faith in the American South.
June was chosen as LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the riots that took place at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan the morning of June 28, 1969, often viewed as the birth of the modern LGBT rights movement. June has also been the month of several landmark United States Supreme Court decisions positively impacting LGBT rights. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed June as NC LGBT Pride Month in October 2017 with the issuance of Executive Order No.24.
